A 2002/3 ITN Factual/Channel 4 two-part documentary which told the story of the Renaissance genius Leonardo da Vinci - his life and the rich legacy of his work as artist and inventor.
This was a very challenging brief as the music had to be innovative and creative like the man himself and had to give a strong flavour of the period whilst also reflecting the fact that in many ways Leonardo was a kind of hinge between the medieval and the modern worlds. In the main theme, this contradictory blend can be heard in the old world instruments (harpsichord, choirs, strings, brass, gong) and in the natural sounds (a massive rock moving at the beginning, two ticking grandfather clocks, wind, low distant voices) with the modern elements being the blending of the two and the use of minimalist form.
I composed enough music for this film to entirely fill 4 CDs but I am planning to release through Ambion Music a concept album based on the journey that I took through Leonardo's thought and times. This will be available soon through the website for anyone who wants to take that journey too. I can totally recommend it as you will be sailing close to heaven inside the mind of a genius and that's really quite an adventure. If you want to get an advance copy and stimulate me into having them made, then mail me and express your interest.
